Eating Like the Pope

Eten als de paus

March 27, 2013

By Arnold Jansen op de Haar

For the election of a pope they prepare his white robes in sizes small, medium and large. For Francis I it turned out to be large. Francis is so huge that he barely fitted into size large. The other Francis could talk to animals, but this one seems to have eaten a few.

Until recently the Pope prepared his own meals, and everyone who does this knows it results in cooking too much food.

Of course, you can halve a chicken fillet and save one half until the next day, but eating the same thing two days in a row isn’t inspiring. So you simply eat the whole fillet in one go.

A rotund pope: that puts me at ease. He’s a modest man; when he was a cardinal he didn’t have a car and lived in a small apartment. Yet he ate a lot, something familiar to people who live alone: food can provide comfort, like alcohol, smoking or a whole packet of biscuits. And this consoles me: the Pope is no different.

A stranger’s eyes constrain you, but they were not present in Cardinal Bergoglio’s apartment. So I predict that now he’s the Pope he will lose weight. Others will tell him to do so, because people often make this suggestion when you’re a bit overweight. Actually, it’s likely that he’s been elected because he’s fat: overweight people age more slowly, hence he doesn’t look as though he’s 76.

Someone once told me: ‘If you lose a bit of weight you’ll end up being a general!’ At that very moment I resolved to become the fattest general in the Dutch army. Life took a different turn, and I’m now a somewhat overweight writer. Or, to use the words of well-known Dutch author A.F.Th. van der Heijden: ‘A novel puts on the pounds.’

If I’m with others, I eat less. Besides, you have to keep the conversation going, and you have to put down your cutlery while talking. You most certainly can’t point a knife at Uncle Harry.

Actually, I think eating in the company of others is a bit messy. You don’t go to the toilet together either. But everyone considers filling up in the company of others to be quite normal.

That is the worst part of cooking contests on TV: the judges tasting the food. Take John Torode in MasterChef: he always takes oversized bites, and goes on to tell us how much he likes it with his mouth full of food. Only when Nigella Lawson takes a bite I’m hooked, and if she licks a spoon I immediately want to marry her.

It’s strange how one finds some people messy eaters but not others. It’s not always down to how they eat, but depends on the circumstances. Teenagers dislike the way their parents eat; you don’t actually want to hear your father’s salivary glands in action. As a teenager I seriously thought about wearing earplugs at dinnertime.

You can have the same experience with celebrities – Guus Hiddink, for example. I don’t know if you know this football manager, but if you happen to spot him on TV, pay attention. Guus Hiddink speaks as if he’s just eaten something very tasty, or as if he can smell a roast chicken that’s ready and waiting for him. Guus’s salivary glands work overtime and I’m shouting ‘lalalalala’ in front of the telly.

Even when eating on my own I do it in a well-brought-up way; I think this is only civilised. I rarely eat in the street, because you don’t shit on the pavement either. I never go to a McDonald’s, because I can’t eat without cutlery. McDonald’s is destroying the table manners of entire generations. Before you know it, someone is sitting down for a state banquet and stuffing food into his mouth with his hands.

Eating is rather messy, so try to do it mostly on your own. However, there’s a chance you may get a little heavier, just like the Pope.

Previous columns:

Dikkere mensen verouderen minder snel.
