Announcing The White Crucifixion
We delighted to announce the publication of The White Crucifixion, a novel about Marc Chagall on 22 February 2018.
‘The White Crucifixion intends to unify Marc Chagall’s life, painting and the Jewish experience in the twentieth century. In some ways, I see it as a follow-up to my previous novel, I, Hogarth.
The two novels are, however, very different because the two artists painted very differently and I try to reflect that (‘Dean writes as Hogarth paints,’ Andrea Wulf, New York Times). Nevertheless, you could see this as a kind of Jewish I, Hogarth.’ – Michael Dean
Publisher Bernadette Jansen op de Haar commented: ‘I’m very excited about Michael Dean’s The White Crucifixion, not only does it take us to the heart of the life of an artist, it also deals with maintaining artistic integrity and Jewish identity under a totalitarian regime.
The White Crucifixion makes a fine addition to our other two artists’ inspired novels: The Yellow House, a novel about Vincent van Gogh and Hold Still, a novel about the mistress and muse of James Whistler and Gustave Courbet.’
